What Is BW Datasource

Data Source is a logical combination of fields selected from various tables to arrive at a form which can act as a source for a target infoprovider in BW.

Maintaining data source includes addition/enhancement of fields, deletion of fields, addition, selection option to the fields (e.g. selection by date, selection by plant/company code), hiding of fields, inversion of figures (requirement of FI) etc.

A BW datasource is a structure, which is created in the source system and replicated to the BW system. Maintaining a datasource in a source system is doing any changes related to the datasource.  It could be adding/deleting fields or checking the flags in the datasource like the hide and selection flag. Also, if the datasource is provided in the LO Cockpit, changes can be made there too depending on how the extraction of data is made for that datasource. Extraction could be of flat file extraction or of multiple flat structures ie., hierarchies.

There are the types of DataSource:

1) DataSource for transaction data

2) DataSource for master data

3) DataSource for attributes

4) DataSource for texts

5) DataSource for hierarchies

NetWeaver 7.0, a new object concept is available for DataSources. It is used in conjunction with the changed objects concepts in data flow and process design (transformation, InfoPackage for loading to the PSA, data transfer process for data distribution within BI). The object type for a DataSource in the new concept - called DataSource in the following - is R3TR RSDS.  The new DataSource concept cannot be used for transferring data from external systems (metadata and data transfer using staging BAPIs), for transferring hierarchies, or when using the IDoc transfer method.

What is the difference between Business content Datasource and Customer Generated?

Business content datasources are activated in transaction RSA5.

Customer generated datasources are customer specific hence no standard datasource available to activate, you need to create it but SAP provides transactions to do so.  For eg : COPA you have transaction KEBO, after you have created operating concern you can choose your fields for datasource here.

What are the steps to extract data from R/3?

- Replicate DataSources

- Assign InfoSources

- Maintain Communication Structure and Transfer rules

- Create and InfoPackage

- Load Data

Can we make a datasource to support delta.

A) If this is a custom (user-defined) datasource you can make the datasource delta enabled. While creating datasource from RSO2, after entering datasource name and pressing create, in the next screen there is one button at the top, which says generic delta.

Generic delta services: -

Supports delta extraction for generic extractors according to:

  • Time stamp.
  • Calendar day.
  • Numeric pointer, such as document number & counter.
  • Only one of these attributes can be set as a delta attribute.
  • Delta extraction is supported for all generic extractors, such as tables/views, SAP Query and function modules.
  • The delta queue (RSA7) allows you to monitor the current status of the delta attribute.
