Course Overview

This is the second course in a two-part series which covers advanced SQL and SQL*Plus. This course introduces the learner to the fundamental concepts of SQL*Plus and queries using SQL*Plus runtime variables. In addition, this course explores saving customizations and enhancing query output.

Learners should be familiar with the basic principles of SQL and PL/SQL using Procedure Builder, or have completed courses 60111, 60112 and 60113. In addition, the first part of this series should have been taken, course 60121 Oracle SQL and SQL*Plus: Advanced Select Statements.

Unit 1: SQL*Plus
Duration: 3 Hour(s)
  • Differentiate between SQL and SQL*Plus.
  • Match the SQL*Plus command categories with sample tasks.
  • Write the code to display the column definitions of a given table.
  • Complete the SELECT statement that prompts the user to input a value at run-time by using the & substitution variable.
  • Write the SET command to display the text of a command before and after it replaces substitution variables with values.
  • Complete the SELECT statement that reuses a substitution variable value without prompting the user each time by using the && variables.
  • Write the SQL*Plus statement to specify a user variable and assign it a CHAR value by using the DEFINE command.
  • Write the SQL*Plus statement that displays a customized prompt when accepting user input by using the ACCEPT command.
Unit 2: Saving Customizations
Duration: 2 - 3 Hour(s)
  • Write the SQL*Plus commands to edit SELECT statements by using line editing commands.
  • Identify the SQL*Plus command used to save the SQL buffer to a file.
  • Identify the SQL*Plus command used to spool the output of SQL*Plus statements to a printer or a file.
  • Identify the commands used to create and execute scripts in SQL*Plus.
  • Identify the purposes of the LOGIN.SQL file.
Unit 3: Enhancing Query Output

  • Format a given column of a report by using the COLUMN command options.
  • Create a page header in a report by using the TTITLE command.
  • Create a page footer in a report by using the BTITLE command.
  • Create a report header by using the REPHEADER command.
  • Create a report footer by using the REPFOOTER command.
  • Identify the functions of the different options of the SET commands.
  • List the current SQL*Plus environment settings by using the SHOW command.
  • Create breaks on the columns of a report by using the BREAK command.
  • Perform computations in a report by using the COMPUTE command.
  • Write the query that extracts data dictionary information to generate SQL*Plus statements.
  • Write a SELECT statement to concatenate quotes.
  • Write the code that will generate a SQL code to grant a new user the same privileges that an existing user has on a system.
