Create Planner Group SAP PM

How do you create planner groups?

By: Graham Johnston

As for Planner groups there is 3 different areas they need to be set up and usually the rule of thumb is to make them all the same for consistency. The first area is for the Maintenance processing areas that includes the technical objects. The purpose of this Planner Group is to identify the person or group of people who organise the maintenance to be carried out on the Technical Object. This is used the most for listing work orders, notifications, F/L, Equipment, Maintenance Items etc. It is located in SPRO at the below location.

Define Planner Group

The second area is Task Lists. They use a different Planner Group then the above area. The propose of this Planner Group is to identify who owns the Task List.

Define Maintenance Planner Group

The third and last area is Capacity Planning. Whether you use this or not I don't know but the purpose of this Planner Group is to allow grouping of Work Centers when listing capacities.

What is the best strategy for creationg the work organisation ? (work centers, planner groups, cost centers...).

The best way I know to set up a work organisation is to lever off you business organisational structure. I have seen good ones and dismal unworkable set ups in my lifetime in SAP.

One area that is missed in most organisations is Main Work Centers. This is an essential field because it is loaded into the F/L or Equipment then ends up on the Notifications, Work Orders & Maintenance Items. So many business use the Operational Work Center e.g. fitters, Electrician, Riggers etc. for this work center and then find reporting down the track is hard. The Main Work center should be based on the team of people who will predominantly manage the maintenance being carried out on the Technical Object.

Most organisation have a team that has different trades in it so you make the Main Work Center to suit the team name. To help you I will list my interpretations of the fields that are populated for a work organisation and you can see whether it fits with your organisation.

  • Planner Group – This is the person or group of people that organise the maintenance of a technical object.
  • Main Work Center – This the group of people who manage the maintenance work being carried out on a technical object.
  • Work Center (Operations on a Work order) – These are the people who physically carry out the work e.g. Fitter, Plumbers, Electricians, Contractors etc.
Sorry to be so long winded but this is a forgotten area of the set up in SAP PM and bits people further down the track if not set up correctly.
